Viterbo….., ancient papal city, former sovereign state, the birthplace of Etruscan and Roman civilizations, and of the Renaissance….VITERBO – ORVIETO – TARQUINIA – ROME – THERMAL BATHS - FLORENCE – SPOLETO – ASSISSI – BOLSENA
DAY ONE : ROME – VITERBO.
Arrival at Rome airport. Bus to Viterbo after customs procedures. Arrival in Viterbo. Booked accommodation. Free time to go sightseeing or relax. Welcome cocktail in hotel. Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight stay.
DAY TWO: (10KM) VITERBO – LA QUERCIA
Breakfast in hotel. Guided tour of Viterbo, ancient papal city, Etruscan settlement and a medieval centre of great interest; tour of the Papal Palace, home of the longest known Conclave, cum-clave, in the history of the Church, the important Etruscan Museum and picture gallery where the most prestigious “Pietà” by Sebastiano Del Piombo, ( one of Michelangelo’s apprentices) is kept; the 15th century Palazzo Dei Priori. Free to lunch anywhere. In the early afternoon there will be a visit to Villa Lante in Bagnaia, historic residence of the Duke , Lante Della Rovere, with its characteristic Renaissance Italian garden that dates back to the XVI century. Back to Viterbo stopping off at the Basilica of La Quercia, with its marvellous ceiling, the work of Antonio Da Sangallo il Giovane.There will be time in the late afternoon to stroll through the historic centre or simply relax. Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight stay in hotel.
DAY THREE (120 KM) ORVIETO – CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO
Breakfast in hotel. Excursion to Orvieto Arrival in Orvieto, important religious centre of Etruscan origin.Guided tour of the town and the Duomo (cathedral) where the relic of the Corpus Domini is kept.Free to lunch anywhere in Orvieto. Visit to St. Patrick’s Well, an ingenious work of art realised by Antonio Da Sangallo il Giovane. Thanks to this well it was possible to draw water from a depth of up to 62 metres. Next excursion is Civita di Bagnoregio ( the dying village), situated on a volcanic rock. Dinner. Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY FOUR (120KM) TARQUINIA
Breakfast in hotel. Guided excursion to the Etruscan- medieval town of Tarquinia.Visit to the Necropolis and Etruscan Museum. Free to lunch anywhere in Tarquinia. Afternoon free to visit the town of Tarquinia. Back to hotel. Dinner. Overnight stay.
DAY FIVE (220KM) ROME
Breakfast in hotel. Departure for Rome, stopping off at Sutri for a brief visit.Guided tour of Ancient Rome, Renaissance Rome or Baroque Rome. Free to lunch anywhere.Continuation of tour. Afternoon free to go shopping. Typical Roman dinner in Trastevere. Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY SIX (12KM) VITERBO – TERME DEI PAPI – CASTEL D’ASSO
Breakfast in hotel. Visit to the Papal Baths and a chance to take a bath in the spa waters.Free to lunch anywhere. Visit to the Etruscan necropolis at Castel D’Asso. Dinner in a restaurant. Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY SEVEN (400KM) FLORENCE
Departure for Florence, stopping off at a motorway restaurant for breakfast.Arrival in Florence. Guided tour from the outside of the main buildings of interest: The Duomo, the Battistero, the Cupola of Brunelleschi, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Ponte Vecchio.Free to lunch anywhere.Continuation of tour and time to shop. Then back to Viterbo.Stopping for dinner in a restaurant on the way back .Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY EIGHT (200KM) ASSISSI – SPOLETO
Breakfast in hotel.Departure for Corbara Lake to admire the panorama and the Park of Titignano.Assissi. Tour of the town.Free to lunch anywhere.Guided tour of the historic part of town, the Roman- medieval- Renaissance part of Spoleto and the rest of the afternoon is free.Dinner in a restaurant( show at the Festival of the Two Worlds ( 3/19 July) depending on the type of music etc…).Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY NINE (70KM) BOLSENA – CAPODIMONTE
Breakfast.Departure for Bolsena.Tour of Bolsena and the church of St. Cristina (miracle of Corpus Domini).Tour of Lake Bolsena; followed by Capodimonte. Free to lunch anywhere.Passenger steamer for the Island of Bisentine.Back to Capodimonte to taste some delicious homemade ice-cream.Afternoon free to sunbathe or go for a swim in the clear lake waters.Excursion to Vitorchiano, typical medieval village. A pizza dinner.Back to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY TEN (80KM) VITERBO – ROME
Breakfast in hotel.Departure for Rome airport. Customs , boarding, and departure.
