ANCIENT VILLAS AND CASTLES IN LAZIO
DAY ONE: VITERBO
Arrival in Viterbo from town of origin and hotel check in.
Free to lunch anywhere.
In the afternoon guided tour of Viterbo, ancient papal city, Etruscan settlement and a medieval centre of great interest. Tour of the Papal Palace, home of the longest known Conclave, cum-clave, in the history of the Church, the important Etruscan Museum and picture gallery where the most prestigious “Pietà” by Sebastiano Del Piombo, (one of Michelangelo’s apprentices) is kept; the 15th century Palazzo Dei Priori.
Dinner in a restaurant and overnight stay.
DAY TWO: ROCCA DI MONTEFIASCONE – BOLSENA CASTLE
Breakfast in hotel then departure for Montefiascone.
Meeting with guide and visit of the medieval Rocca Castle.
From the castle's gardens we can admire an unbelievable and spectacular 360° panorama of the entire Tuscia region, including Cimini and Tolfa mountains, Amiata, Argentario, Viterbo and the lake through the golden hollow of Montefiascone.
On to Bolsena, visit of the Castle “ Rocca Monaldeschi”. From its towers there is a magnificent view of the lake and of the city. Visit of the St. Cristina’s Church.
The Sanctuary in Orvieto’s Cathedral is linked to the miracle of Bolsena. Pietro da Praga,
the Bohemian priest did not believe that the transubstantiation, that is the conversion of the
bread and wine into the Lord’s Body and blood was true. One day in the year 1263, while
celebrating Mass near the tomb of Saint Christina of Bolsena, he saw some drops of blood
dripping from the consecrated Host.
Free to lunch anywhere. Bus ride back to hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY THREE : DUOMO IN ORVIETO – PROCENO CASTLE
Breakfast in hotel and departure for excursion to Orvieto.
Arrival in Orvieto, important religious centre of Etruscan origin.
Guided tour of the town and the Duomo (cathedral) where the relic of the Corpus Domini is kept.
Free to lunch anywhere.
On to Proceno and visit of the old Castle.
From there we can admire the magnificent panorama of Monte Amiata.
Back to hotel, evening meal and overnight stay.
DAY FOUR : ORSINI CASTLE IN SORIANO – PALAZZO FARNESE IN CAPRAROLA –BRACCIANO CASTLE
Breakfast in hotel and departure for excursion to Soriano nel Cimino. Visit of the Orsini Castle.
On to Caprarola. Visit of Palazzo Farnese.
Free to lunch anywhere.
On to Bracciano and visit of the Odescalchi Castle.
Back to hotel, evening meal and overnight stay.
DAY FIVE : VITERBO – VILLA LANTE IN BAGNAIA
Breakfast in hotel and departure for Bagnaia, visit of “ Villa Lante” Bagnaia, historic residence of the Duke Lante Della Rovere, with its characteristic Renaissance Italian garden that dates back to the XVI century. Lunch in a restaurant in the area.
End of tour.
